-
1994
1994 is almost prehistory on this map: brick phones, IBM Simon, early Nokia. If this was your first mobile, it was probably a family object, not a teenage one.
-
1995
1995 still looks like the 1980s in the hand. Antennas, thick batteries, short talk time. The 2140 sits here as a working Nokia, not a design piece.
-
1996
1996 is StarTAC and the 8110 banana phone. Clamshells and Matrix-era curves. People remember the hinge more than the menu.
-
1997
1997 is Snake on a Nokia 6110. Games were a hidden extra. The phone was still for calls.
-
1998
1998 is swappable covers and chrome. The 5110 taught a generation that a phone could look like yours. The 8810 tried to look like jewellery.
-
1999
1999 is WAP, the 3210, and the 7110 slide. The web on a phone was a rumour that sometimes loaded. You still wrote SMS with your thumb.
-
2000
2000 is the 3310 year in memory, even when the box said another model. Batteries lasted. Covers clicked. It is the boring classic this map needs.
-
2001
2001 is colour screens arriving without apps. The 5510 had a music keyboard. Most people still bought a phone that only had to ring.
-
2002
2002 is cameras, round keypads, and China brands beside Nokia. The 7650 took photos that looked like stamps. Bird sold a fighter-jet slogan.
-
2003
2003 is Symbian in a pocket, N-Gage as a taco, and Amoi dancing in ads. The 1100 sold in the tens of millions with a torch.
-
2004
2004 is the RAZR. Thin metal. A clamshell as fashion. 3G starts to mean something if you had a 6630. Most lines still ran on 2G pride.
-
2005
2005 is Walkman phones, Cyber-shot cameras, PEBL stones, and iTunes on a ROKR. Music and photos fight the keypad for attention.
-
2006
2006 is Chocolate, XpressMusic, N73, stainless 6300. Touch is a rumour. Slide phones and black glass still feel like the future.
-
2007
2007 on this map only runs to June. N95, Shine, and the original iPhone as the last station. Anything announced after that month stays off the line.
